TOP 8 QUESTIONS WE HEAR FROM PATIENTS

Am I suitable?

  • Mammogram is recommended for women ages 40 years and above.

  • Ultrasound is safe for most people. However, your medical history will help us further assess your suitability to this treatment. This treatment is not suitable for those who are pregnant, have metal implants, neurological conditions like epilepsy, tumors, liver or kidney problems.

  • X-ray is not recommended if you are pregnant or suspecting preganancy.

What preparations do I need to do?
  • When doing Mammogram, please avoid applying powder, perfume and lotion around the breast and armpit area.

  • When doing Ultrasound, you will be required to either fast or keep your bladder full. Fasting of atleast 6 hours is required when doing Abdominal and Hepatobiliary Ultrasound. Drinking of at least 4-6 glasses of water prior to the examination is required to keep your bladder full if you are doing Pelvis, Prostate or Kidney Ultrasound.

  • No preparation needed when doing X-Ray.

Will it Hurt?
  • Mammogram should not be painful, but it can be uncomfortable for some women. A large breasted woman typically has less discomfort than a small breasted one due simply to the size and ability to see more of the breast tissue between the compression "paddles" for the x-ray.

  • Ultrasound scan does not hurt. However, there might be some discomfort for some ultrasounds since they will be asked to fill their bladder, and compression on this part of the body can be uncomfortable.

  • X-ray is known to be done in a painless procedure. It does not give any discomfort to the patient doing it.

Is the procedure safe?
  • Mammogram is a safe procedure. There is a very tiny amount of radiation exposure to it.

  • Ultrasound is not hazardous. There are no known harmful effects doing it and no radiation exposure.

  • X- Ray is also a very safe procedure. The amount of radiation is very small and the benefits greatly outweigh the risk of harm.

How long does it take?
  • Mammogram can be completed within 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Ultrasound can be completed within 15 to 20 minutes.

  • X- Ray can be completed within 10 minutes.

Do I need to fast?

Mammogram and X-ray will not require you to fast. Fasting is only required if you are doing the Abdominal and Hepatobiliary Ultrasound.
